‘I just wanted to sweep the path clean.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the phone I have a lady who slipped while cleaning up the leaves. Wet leaves, one wrong move and there she was. The kind of autumn chore that makes you go outside for a while. Hardly close your coat, because you’ll be back in no time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only this time it is different. She has pain in her groin and thigh. Coming to the GP post yourself is not possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questions to assess the situation properly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During such a conversation, I try to imagine what is happening on the other end of the line. I don’t see the lady, so I have to rely on her answers. How did she fall? Did she perhaps get dizzy or unwell at first? Did she hit her head? We specifically ask for alarm signals to estimate how urgently someone needs help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I ask further about her leg. Where exactly is the pain? Can she still move it? Has standing or leaning on it been possible since the fall? I don’t think she has to get up for that. What didn’t work already, she doesn’t have to prove again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, I listen to how she sounds and ask if anyone is with her. All those answers help me determine what care is needed. ‘Just slipped’ tells how it started, but not yet what the consequences are. Fortunately, her son has now come and she is not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From phone call to visit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I plan a visit. The GP visits the lady and has an ambulance come after assessment. She has to go to the hospital for photos. With this pain, getting into a car yourself is not a viable option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, her hip turns out to be broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That remains special about our work. For me, it’s a phone call during my shift. For Mrs. Van der Dijk, it is the beginning of a day that is completely different from what she had planned. She went outside with a broom and ended up in the hospital with a broken hip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think about her path for a moment. Of that ‘just a little longer’, which we are all so good at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hopefully someone will clean up the broom for her. She would probably have preferred that I had only said that there will be new leaves tomorrow. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
